Asus’ Budget Offering –the Eee PC 701SDX in Pink
Written by Mr Pink | Filed Under Pink Asus Laptops
Asus, the pioneer of the netbook niche, was once hailed as a phenomenal trendsetter but lately the only trend it’s been setting is that of releasing way too many models into the market that aren’t even aimed at specifically identified customer groups. Go to their website and try to browse through their netbook offerings and you’ll see what I mean. Each size, when clicked on, results in a lengthy drop down list.
While coming up with better models is by no means a superfluous task, flooding the market with new models ever so often isn’t the smartest plan either. Customers are left wondering whether or not they should buy the latest addition or just wait to see what the next one’s like. Many might even wonder if the subsequent additions are results of research and reviews that cast them in a negative light. And then there’s the confusion that results from an excess of choice.
In an attempt to provide you with up-to-date information on every pink laptop available in the market we have undertaken to review each of the pink laptops put out by Asus in the recent past (including those still in the offing but excluding those that we’ve already reviewed of course). So the next few posts will be Asus centered.
Let’s start off with the latest on the Asus front – the Eee PC 701SDX. Not yet available in the market, this 7” netbook is being looked upon as Asus’ next budget offering. Experts estimate that this netbook will be priced in the range of $300.
The most exciting part about this is that it will also be made available to customers in Asus’ interpretation of Pink – a color they’ve named Sakura.
What’s already known is that the new budget netbook will be similar in appearance to its original predecessor, the 701; will have a 7” display; and will not have a webcam. As such it’s expected to weigh less than a kilogram. While speculations are rife about whether or not it’ll be powered by an Atom processor or an Intel CPU, Asus itself lists the specs of this model as having an Intel Celeron M 353 processor with 512MB RAM. The size of the SSD hard drive will remain limited to 4GB though Asus offers its customers the complimentary usage of 10GB Eee storage space for a period of 18 months. There also seem to be conflicting reports about whether or not the OS will be Linux or Windows XP. The Asus website describes a Linux based Eee PC 701SDX though there’s a good chance they’ll also come out with a Windows XP version.
The size of half an A4 sheet, Asus claims that this new model will feature a shock-proof design, will consume less power, boot up much faster and heat up much slower. The 4 cell Li-ion battery only claims to offer 2.5 hours of life per charge and that in our opinion is a major drawback for a netbook since it’s generally used by mobile users. Asus assuages these anxieties by informing customers in the Overview section that the Super Hybrid Engine will ensure max system performance and battery life.
