Asus Eee PC 1000H – Sakura Pink

As mentioned in the previous post, we are going to be reviewing all of Asus’ Sakura (read pink) colored netbooks and laptops for the benefit of you, our pink-loving readers. In today’s post we take a close look at the Asus Eee PC 1000H which is their largest (10”) contribution to the netbook market.
Asus, which first started off with 7” netbooks moved on to add 9” and 10” models to its netbook range in an attempt to woo customers looking for a mobile laptop that nevertheless has a bigger display and keyboard, convenient enough for adult-usage. This increase in size does add a bit more weight, (1.45kg compared to the PC 1000’s 1.3kgs),but the sleeker design of the 1000H (as compared to the 7” products) makes for an overall appearance that’s stylish rather than bulky. Increase in size has also enabled the inclusion of almost all the features associated with a regular laptop such as a standard hard drive, (2.5”), instead of an SSD (Solid State Drive). In an aside, let me mention to those readers who prefer the durable SSDs to standard HDs, that Asus does have the Eee PC 1000 with a 40GB SSD, however these are only available in white and black. The Linux based PC 1000H also comes with a 40GB SSD and is available in pink.
Getting back to the Asus Eee PC 1000H, let’s quickly take in the main specs. Embedded with an Intel Atom 1.6GHz heart, 1GB RAM (extendable to 2GB though Asus doesn’t allow that while it’s under warranty), 80GB HDD, Intel UMA graphics, WLAN 802.11n and Bluetooth, the 1000H has the following ports: a VGA port, 3 USB ports, an SHDC compatible card reader, 2 audio jacks, an Ethernet port and a Kensington lock port.
Open it up and you see the 1.3 MP webcam and four special keys that allow you to adjust the display settings, increase or decrease the netbook’s performance levels (impacting the battery life) and launch Skype. The 10” display has a 1024X600 resolution which falls between the standard 16:10 and 16:9 ratios. The matte finish minimizes glare and the size of the screen is comfortable enough for use even though you will find yourself having to scroll a bit more to see the whole page.
This netbook takes only about 23-25 seconds to boot and so long as you engage in regular word processing or web browsing features, you’ll be impressed by its performance. The GMA950 graphics card makes it next to impossible for you to play anything but flash and basic emulator games.
The keyboard though 95% the size of a regular notebook’s, does take some getting used to. The touchpad, however, is a fairly good size and is a Synaptics touchpad with multi-touch features built in.
The six cell 6600mAh battery ensures 5 hours of battery life on max performance. Though Asus claims 7 hours, that’s only possible if you set your screen brightness to minimum, disable your ports and webcam and switch off your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Buyers will be happy to know that the Eee PC 1000H ships with a well made slipcase that protects their Sakura netbooks from scratches.
